Driving from the airport start off by making your way out to the Western Highway. You will see signs for Belmopan and San Ignacio. Take the Western Highway west for about an hour. You will come upon the Humming Bird Highway on the Left hand side. If you go straight that will take you all the way to San Ignacio and the border. If you go left it will take you into Belmopan. Make a Left towards Belmopan.
Belmopan is just a few miles down the Humming Bird. You will come to a rotary that bypasses you from Belmopan. go straight through the rotary. If you have time to spare take this highway at a leiserly pace. It is very beautiful and there are plenty of sights to see along the way down. The Blue Hole, Caves Branch, 5 Blues Lakes are just to name a few. Once you have winded your way down the Humming Bird(about another hour, longer if you took your time) you will be coming upon another junction. This is going to be the Southern Highway and it will be on your Right hand side. If you go straight it will take you to Dangriga. If you go Right it will take you to Maya Beach and beyond. The Sign will read Punta Gorda/Hopkins Make a Right onto the Southern Highway **** Shortly before the junction you will see Xibels(pronounced shy-bells) Gas Station. This is the LAST gas station before you reach Maya Beach.****.
Placencia Peninsula junction is just another 45 minutes. Mama Noots/Antelope Falls and Jaguar Reservation are along this stretch of road. You will see the Placencia Peninsula Junction on your Left hand side. By making a Left you will be leaving paved road at this point and will start your dirt road journey. Try to arrive here by 4:30PM to ensure daylight travel. There are no street lights and in the event that you end up with a flat tire you will be changing it alone in the dark. From this point you are about 22 miles away from Maya Beach.
You will see a sign once you have arrived to Maya Beach. We are just down the road another 1.5-2 miles. Be on the look out once you have passed Mangos on the Left. You will then see The Hungry Gecko and Maya Point Market on the Right. We are just up the road. You will see our place and sign on the Left hand side of the road. If you have reached Barnacle Bill’s or Singing Sands you have gone too far, turn around and go back.
You will have to take a taxi to get to The Diving Pelican. Most taxi drivers know where we are. Just let them know that we are in Maya Beach and we are just past Barnacle Bill’s on the Right hand side. If you have reached The Hungry Gecko you have gone too far.
